Tour spotlight: Hastings, Tahune & Huon Valley
Only have a day to play? Let Tours around Tasmania show you the highlights of southern Tasmania on this popular day trip from Hobart.
Our one-day tour to Hastings Caves and Tahune Adventures is the perfect showcase of Tasmania’s beautiful environment. We travel through the picturesque Huon Valley with its quaint historic villages and tranquil rivers, on our way to see two of Tasmania’s most stunning natural wonders.
Hastings Caves and Thermal Pool
See the magic that lies beneath our island. A specialist guide will take you underground to explore the star attraction of Hastings Caves – Newdegate Cave. This is the largest dolomite cave open to visitors in Australia. Explore the striking chambers and marvel at the stalactites, columns, shawls, stalagmites and the unusual helictites.
Hastings Caves are surrounded by lush forest which is home to platypus, wallabies and pademelons. Take a short stroll along the Platypus Walk and see if you can spot the cute elusive creature.
Feeling chilly after being underground? Warm up in the nearby pool which is fed by thermal springs. The water is a blissful 28 degrees Celsius all year. Float on your back and take in the serenity.
Once warmed up, we head to the treetops.
Tahune Adventures
With more than 12,000 years of isolation, Tasmania’s forests are home to plants found nowhere else. From the world’s largest flowering trees to one of the slowest growing trees on earth – the Huon pine – there’s a fascinating array of flora on the island.
Get to the heart of the forest at Tahune Adventures. Wander through the Huon Pine Walk and see both young and mature Huon pines thriving in the natural rainforest.
Walk among the treetops on the 600-metre walkway that ends at a cantilevered platform 50 metres above the river. Soak in the spectacular views of the mountains in World Heritage Area.
Breathe deep, you are in ancient forest. You’ll want to hug these majestic giants. Hold on as you cross two suspension bridges on the Swinging Bridge track. Below are the mighty Picton and Huon Rivers which stem from the Southwest wilderness.
Want to soar above the forest like an eagle? For an extra cost, thrill seekers can try the Cable Eagle Hang Glider and be whisked 250 metres across the forest and Huon River at speeds of up to 40km per hour!
For those that prefer a slower pace, enjoy some down time with a local cider, wine or hot chocolate and take in the view at the Visitor Centre.
